Preparation

  • You will need to have Windows permissions to run the AppInstaller as Administrator

  • You will require the server and database details

  • You will require the ‘sa’ administrator user password

  • You will require an upgrade code to complete the upgrade. If you do not have one, please contact Syrinx Support.

  • Close all Syrinx sessions on all PCs and instruct users that they should not log in while the upgrade is in progress.

  • A database backup will be created automatically as part of the upgrade procedure and will be saved as \SQLDataSp\Backup\SyrinxXX_Pre_Upgrade_5_x_x.bak

  • If the Syrinx clients are hosted on a terminal server additional steps may be required. Please contact Syrinx support (0118 956 9577) before proceeding.

  • You will need to know the specific name of your database/s. You can find this within Syrinx 365 in the ‘Help’ option of the right hand menu >> Select the “i” and it will show you the database that you are connected to.

Upgrading to Syrinx 365 v5.x.x

Upgrading Applications

ℹ️ It is recommended to upgrade all add-ons when upgrading Syrinx 365. This would include the ‘Mobile Web Service’, ‘Syrinx API’, ‘Task Scheduler’ etc. They are all within the AppInstaller but if you have different servers with different components you will need to update the software on the correct server.

  1. Log on to your server as a user with Windows administrative privileges.

  2. You can either run the AppInstaller executable as an administrator or select the “Syrinx App Installer” option from Windows “Programs and Features” and press the “Change” button:

  3. The AppInstaller will check for any updates available for the installed Syrinx components and can issue the below prompt to the user if any are available:

  4. It is also possible to manually check for updates by pressing the “Check for Updates” button when viewing the installed components.  If any updates are available, the “Update available…” text will be displayed against the component detailing the available update version.  You can select an individual entry to update a specific component, or press the “Upgrade All” button to update all components with available updates.

  5. The Syrinx AppInstaller is not a version-dependent component of the Syrinx 365 system and can be used to install/upgrade multiple versions of Syrinx 365 and its components, but there may be occasional functionality or performance updates to this application in the future. If a later version of the Syrinx 365 AppInstaller executable is run on a PC with an existing AppInstaller installation, the user will be issued with the following prompt, and saying “OK” will update the installed AppInstaller to the latest version:

ℹ️ For the server upgrade, the minimum components to upgrade are: Syrinx 365, Syrinx 365 API and the DB Admin Tool.

      Upgrading the Database

      1. Run the Database Admin Tool from the Windows ‘Start Menu’

      2. Login as the Syrinx 'sa' user, and connect to your SyrinxXX database. **You will have noted down your database name during the preparation steps at the beginning of this guide. Your database will not be named SyrinxXX.

      3. You may see a message warning you that you are not connected to the master database. This can be safely ignored by pressing ‘OK’.

      4. Ensure that all users are logged out of the system

      5. Select the “Upgrade Database” option

      6. Read the warning and press 'OK' to proceed.

      7. The upgrade screen will appear where you will see the “Current Version” of your database and the “New Version” that you will be upgrading to.

      8. Select “OK”

      9. If you have proceeded with the upgrade, you will see an upgrade confirmation screen. Press “Yes” to upgrade your system.

      10.  A backup will now be taken of your database. Please wait for this to complete.

      11. On completion of the backup, a confirmation box will appear. Press “OK” to continue.

      12. The upgrade process will now commence. Note: If you receive an error message during this stage, do not click on any further buttons. You should call Syrinx support (0118 956 9577) immediately, and you will be advised how to proceed from this point.

      13. You may be asked to print off the system reports. Please ensure your printer has paper or print the error/event logs to a PDF printer, then press 'OK'. If this box does not appear, then close the ‘Syrinx Database Administration’ program. The upgrade of the server has now completed.

      14. You will see the report in print preview mode, press the ‘Print’ icon on the main window bar, and when completed, close the preview screen. **It is not necessary to print the logs to complete the upgrade. We simply use them to gain visibility of any unreported system issues in an effort to correct them in future versions.

      15. Press “Close” on the Upgrade Syrinx Database window.

      16. A “Print completed?” confirmation box will appear, please answer “Yes” or “No”.

        1. If you reply “Yes” to the above, an error log is generated and saved onto your hard drive, press “OK” to continue.

        2. Or, if informed that the error log already exists, press “Yes” to append the new details to the file.

      17. Finally, close the Syrinx Database Administration program if you have no other Syrinx databases to upgrade.

      18. The upgrade is now complete on the Server

                Upgrading Syrinx Client Computers

                1. The steps used within the ‘Upgrading Applications’ section are the same for a client computer. You can use the dropdown in the top right corner to select the “Client” option. This will only show you components relevant to client installs/upgrades.

                2. Press the “Check for Updates” button.

                3. Select the Syrinx 365 component by ticking the box and then pressing “Update”.

                4. Follow the same steps as above.

                Troubleshooting

As mentioned previously, the Syrinx AppInstaller application must be “Run as Administrator”.  If this is not done, the user will not be able to select a component for installation, and the “Install” button will be greyed out.

The PC will require full internet access, as the app installer will download the necessary Syrinx applications and prerequisites during the installation process.  Restrictions on a PC’s internet access or on specific domains may prevent the installer from completing the installation process.

The AppInstaller will log its activity in the user’s home directory, C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp, and will be prefixed with “Syrinx_APP_Installer” and suffixed with the time and date.  These logs can be checked for issues if an error occurs during the installation process and a component fails to install:
