Installing a Printer to a Local PC

Overview: Printers are installed on your server in order to print through Point-of-Rental. However, oftentimes people also would like to print to the same printer from their local side of their PC. This could be to print out something from the internet or anything else. It is possible to do this because your PC is connected by the network to the server. For this How-To we are installing a Dell 2335dn printer.  NOTE** This document is not to be confused with installing a shared printer, which is not supported.

a)   First you need the IP address of the printer you want to install. This can be found by printing a network setup page manually through your printer.  Or…

b)   You can also go to devices and printers from the main server. Right-click on the printer you wish to install and go to printer properties (or properties on some systems). There are several tabs along the top, click on ports. From there click on configure the port. That will give you the IP address that you need.

1.   Go to the local side of your PC. This means you should not see the green POR blob -  image003_008 on your desktop, you should see this -.

2.   From the Start menu go to your devices and printers. This may be listed on the start menu, or you can find it through Control Panel.

3.   At the top of the screen, click on “Add Printer” when it asks you what type, click “Add a Local Printer”.

5.   Next you will need to type in the IP address of the printer. You got the IP address before step one of this How-To. Type it in the top line. It will automatically fill in the lower one.

6.   Next you will be asked to select the driver for the printer. Find the manufacturer of your printer in the left column, and then find the correct model on the right. If you do not see your manufacturer or model, click on the Windows Update button. This will go to Windows Update and download all the drivers available. It may take a few minutes and you will likely be able to find the right driver after. (If you still cannot find the driver you may need to ask your network administrator for assistance)

7.   Next you simply need to name your printer. It is typically best to include the model name and location in the name of the printer. Click Next

8.   Windows will then ask you if you want to share your printer. Click “Do Not Share” and click Next and you are finished. You can choose to print a test page to ensure success and set the printer as your default printer as well.
