Inventory Assignments
This article will discuss inventory assignments. Inventory Assignments allow you to select the location where inventory will be stored. Inventory item records contain a "current store" that identifies the current location of the particular item. The field "home store" designates the normal location of the item. For items that are frequently shared among stores, the program recognizes a "home store" of "000" to mean the item can be rented, reserved, or sold from any store without warning.

Initially, it might appear that ALL inventory should have a "000" in the home store field. This could be done, but probably shouldn't be, as this feature is designed to protect the counter personnel from renting inventory that is actually at another location. Another problem is that our monthly and annual Item Income Reports are intended to show income for each store. With a home store of "000", the program does not know which store to assign the item to, so all income for the item is assigned to the main store.
The report programs that reference the item's file provide some flexibility in selecting which items are reported for each store. These programs will ask you to enter a store code, Report Generator is an example of this. You should respond as follows:
At the Main Store
If you enter "?" for the store number, all items at all stores will be selected. If you enter the store "x", you will be asked the question "select shared items also (y or n)?" If you answer Y, then all items with a home store of "x" plus all items with a home store of "000" will be selected. If your answer is N, then only items with a home store of "x" will be selected.
At the Satellite Stores
You will be asked the question "select shared items also (y or n)?" If you answer Y then all items at the local store plus all items with a home store of "000" will be selected. If you answer N then only items at the local store with the selected.
