Managing Windows Server User Accounts Windows Server 2012 & Windows Server 2012 R2

Please note: Microsoft has ended life for Windows Server 2012 & Windows Server 2012 R2.

This article explains how to reset a user account’s password, unlock a user account, and disable a user account on your Windows server.  NOTE:  The Point of Rental Systems software has no functions to add, delete, or edit Windows user account administration.  This administration must be done from within the Windows operating system.

Domain Server or Workgroup Server?

Your server can be configured to manage user accounts in two different ways, one as a Domain Controller and one as a Workgroup Server. To find out which way your server is configured go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools. If you see an icon called Active Directory Users and Computers, you are a Domain Controller. If you do not see that icon then open Computer Management and expand Local Users and Groups on the left pane and select the Users folder.  If on the right-pane user accounts are displayed then this is where you will edit them.  This is considered a workgroup server. If you do not see any user accounts under Computer Management then your server is part of a domain in which user accounts are held in Active Directory Users and Computers.  If you do not see any user accounts here then they are held on another server and you should contact your server administrator for further assistance.

First, you have to open the Control Panel and then open Administrative Tools.  On Windows 2008 Server and older you normally would have a Control Panel button on the start menu.  On Windows 2012 Server and for Windows 8 PCs it can be a bit different.  On a Windows 2012 Server, there are several ways to navigate to the Control Panel.  We will cover the two most popular ways.  First, move your mouse pointer to the furthermost bottom left corner of your screen.  A hidden start button will appear.  Click on it to be taken to the Windows Metro screen.  You should see a “pin” for Control Panel.
