Basic Server Requirements
Below are the Point of Rental Software server requirements that can help you get a Microsoft Windows server to host your Point of Rental Software application. First read the Warning section to see configurations to avoid. You will also find example server specifications in the Server Requirements section based on the number of Point of Rental Software end users. Use these examples as a rule of thumb when selecting your server. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your server requirements, please call Point of Rental Software at 1-800-944-7368.
WARNING
- Windows Small Business Server/Windows Server Essentials will NOT work because it only allows a maximum of two remote users at a time.
- Do NOT install Point of Rental Systems on a Microsoft Exchange Server.
- Virtualized servers (either on-premises or off-premises) should be scaled accordingly to our recommended server requirements to avoid performance degradation. End users access the Point of Rental software via Microsoft Remote Desktop Services which is a primary server role. Virtualization of Remote Desktop Services requires expertise in virtual solutions (Hyper-V, VMWare, AWS, Microsoft Azure) that go beyond Point of Rental Software general support.
- If you plan on using an off-premises server, then the same network infrastructure requirements apply. Site-to-site (Gateway-to-Gateway) VPNs are required for printers and our Credit Card module to work properly. A proper network infrastructure is critical for off-premises servers as this will impact performance.
- If you are already using the Point of Rental software and are moving to a different server then you must request the Migration Documentation and notify our IT department of your intended migration time frame. If you are already using the Point of Rental software and are moving to a different server then you must utilize the new server specification and requirement in addition to following the Migration information provided in this document.
SERVER REQUIREMENTS
Additional features such as RAID controllers, Multi-Core / Multi-CPUs, additional Hard Drives, DVD-ROM, Redundant power supplies, etc. are recommended. A 3-year next business day or better manufacturer’s hardware warranty is strongly recommended.
- Operating System: Windows Server 2022, 2019, 2016
- 1 Windows User Client Access License (CAL) per Point of Rental Software end user.
- 1 Remote Desktop User CAL per Point of Rental Software end user.
- Computing RAM requirements: 8GB of RAM plus 1GB per end user with a minimum of 16GB of RAM minimum required. Note: 1GB per user is based on running the Point of Rental software. Consideration must be given if other applications will be run concurrently on the user’s session.
- For 8 to 25 users a minimum of 16GB of RAM is required. Utilizing 16GB memory modules ensures maximum memory density within your system and would allow for future scalability. Consult with the manufacturer for memory configuration options. If you feel there will be user growth over the lifetime of the server, doubling the estimated RAM requirements will ensure that the growth will not impede general operations. Memory (RAM) is inexpensive and having more than less in this case is always the better option.
- SSD or 15,000 RPM SAS Hard Drives are highly recommended. For servers hosting less than 7 end users 7.2K RPM SATA2/3 Hard Drives can be used. The minimum recommended drive size is 300GB to store Windows, User accounts, Windows Updates, and the Point of Rental software with associated data.
- 1 64-bit Intel Xeon multi-core processor that supports logical processors (Hyper-Threading). 2.1 GHz or higher is recommended. For a system with 7 users or less a 4 CORE 8 LOGICAL Intel Xeon processor is the minimum recommendation. To ensure sufficient PHYSICAL and LOGICAL processors are available, one will need to know the number of simultaneous users that will be accessing the system to calculate the number of LOGICAL processors and multiple processor requirements. As an example, 1 XEON 6 CORE 12 LOGICAL processor can support 8 to 25 users depending on usage. As a general rule, you want no more than 2 users per logical processor installed in the system. When calculating the number of LOGICAL Cores and multiple CPU’s ensure to consider future growth of the user population that could be running the Point of Rental software or other business requirements that could be added to the system.
- 1 Gigabit network interface card
- Faxing with the Point of Rental software. Metrofax.com services are integrated with the Point of Rental software. Visit http:// Metrofax.com for subscription details.
- 1 DVD-ROM drive
- Off-site Internet backup solution and 1 internal hard drive to perform a Microsoft Windows Server Backup System State backup.
These are the basic requirements. Additional features such as RAID controllers, Multi-Core / Multi-CPUs, additional Hard Drives, DVD-R/W, Redundant power supplies, etc. are recommended. 3-year next-business day or better manufacturer’s hardware warranty is strongly recommended.
