To make your specs work best for your customers, consider these tips:
- Avoid copying long specs from manufacturers – instead, try to include useful information that will help your online customers, e.g. dimensions, weight, power spec, restrictions of use, etc.
Note: As you get repeated phone calls/email messages from customers asking the same questions about an item, don’t forget to enter this info into that item’s POR spec!
- Including a paragraph of full sentences with the name of the item as well as alternate names for the item can help with your SEO
- Example:
This rugged commercial quality pressure washer works well for washing buildings, fence, sidewalks, etc. Don't be fooled by imitations that offer the same PSI but a low "gallons per minute" rating, or GPM. Power washers with a low GPM can be ineffective regardless of the PSI.
- Instead of “UPPER CASE”, use “Sentence case” throughout all specs to make your contracts & website more professional and readable.
-
Example - instead of:
ENGINE FUEL - DIESEL
HORSEPOWER - 35.5 HP
RATED OPERATING CAPACITY (SAE) -1000 LBS
TIPPING LOAD - 2002 LBS
OPERATING WEIGHT - 4091 LBS
TRAVEL SPEED - 6.4 MPH
Type your spec as follows:
Engine Fuel - Diesel
Horsepower - 35.5 HP
Rated Operating Capacity (SAE) -1000 lbs
Tipping Load - 2002 lbs
Operating Weight - 4091 lbs
Travel Speed - 6.4 mph
-
Enter each line without a preceding character
-
Your POR hosted website will automatically add bullets for formatting purposes
-
Example - instead of:
-
Engine Fuel Diesel
-
Horsepower 35.5 HP
-
-
Enter as following:
Engine Fuel - Diesel
Horsepower - 35.5 HP
-
If you would like to include information in the Specs but keep them from showing on the website,
-
Enter a preceding “~”
-
Example:
-
Engine Fuel - Diesel
Horsepower - 35.5 HP
~ change oil on 6/3/12
Weight – 224lbs
Will show on the website as:
Engine Fuel - Diesel
Horsepower - 35.5 HP
Weight – 224lbs
-
If you would like to reference an external website from within your POR spec, enter the following format:
“Click
<a target="_blank" rel=”noopener” href="http://www.whateverwebsite.com/whatever.html">here</a> for additional information”
Note: Replace the highlighted portion with the target external website’s URL. Even if the actual link uses https:// use http:// in your link – our code expects it!
Example: http://rermag.com/mag/equipment_steering_clear_030104/
-
If you would like to reference a document from within your POR spec, enter the following format:
Click
<a target="_blank" rel=”noopener” href="http://www.yourwebsite.com/galleryupload/webdoc/guides/whatever.html">
here</a> for additional information
Note: Replace the highlighted portion with your document URL. Even if the actual link uses https:// use http:// in your link – our code expects it!
Example: http://RentalStore.com/galleryupload/webdoc/guides/popcornmachineinstructions.pdf
Pros - For document links, you have full control to explain what the document is about in the link text; if you use your own YouTube channel, you will never have broken links.
Cons - You must get the syntax exactly right in your specs for this to work. If you use a manufacturer link or website link not under your control, and that page changes, you could end up with a broken link.
Refer to Adding Equipment Guides, Instructions, and Links to Your Website for more information on loading documents to your website.
