Items may be sorted on the website in one or a combination of the following ways:
- Item Name (DEFAULT)
- Item Key
- Web Group
Item Name is the default sort order which will be in place when we start work on your new integrated website. If your site is already live, check with the WebTeam to determine which sort order is in place.
If you prefer to sort your items by Item Key, notify the WebTeam to set the order accordingly.
To control your own sort order, you will use the Web Group option.
- This option will sort the items within a category; you can use it for all categories or just select ones.
- Categories in which the item records do not contain sort values in the Web Group field will default to your secondary sort order: Item Name or Key, whichever you have chosen for the site in general.
- Using numeric values such as 100, 110, 200, 210, etc., enter the value at the beginning of the Web Group field.
- You don't need a space or comma or anything between the sort code and whatever code comes next.
- The values must be the same length for the sort to work properly (so don’t use 10, 20, 100, 120).
- Be sure to leave gaps in your values so that you may add future new items in between existing items without having to renumber.
- Time-saving trick: Let’s say you’re controlling the order of Earthmoving Equipment and their Attachments. You may wish to show the Loaders first, then the Attachments. You can get by without entering a value in Web Group on the Loaders; because they have a blank value, they will show first, in your secondary sort order, followed by your Attachments in Web Group order. This trick will NOT work, however, if you have any items in the category with any other values in the Web Group field (i.e. <NEWITEM>, <NOPRICING>, etc.)
- Because you could have other codes like <NOPRICING> and <NEWITEM> entered in some of your items, our code will unfortunately mistake those for sort codes and you may get unexpected results. Therefore, you should enter a sort code in every item that is active within each category you are sorting on your website.
- Once you’ve entered your sort codes, notify the WebTeam to set the code on your website to use the sort codes.

But yes, you can control the sorting of categories. You do so by typing a sort code into the WebTag field in the category records. There are a few tricks/tips to keep in mind:
- Keep the sort codes the same length/type, we suggest using 3 numbers.
- The sort code MUST be at the BEGINNING of the WebTag, with any other codes following it, i.e. 101<NOPRICING> or 101<DONOTSHOW>, where '101' is the sort code.
- You don't need a space or comma or anything between the sort code and whatever code comes next.
- Always leave values available between your sort codes to allow for new categories to be added, i.e. if you have 5 categories now, number them 101, 201, 301, 401, 501. That gives you plenty of sort values to add in between when you set up new categories.
If you're also sorting items within categories, you can use the same codes in the items that you use in the categories.
Because you could have other codes like <NOPRICING> and <DONOTSHOW> entered in some of your categories, our code will unfortunately mistake those for sort codes and you may get unexpected results. Therefore, you should enter a sort code in every category that is active on your website.
Once you’ve entered your sort codes, notify the WebTeam to set the code on your website to use the sort codes.
