eCommerce | Website Inventory Organization - Divisions, Categories, & Items
Divisions and Categories determine the organization of your site, so it’s critical to set them up properly. The POR Web Team will work with you to determine the organization of your site and the applicable divisions that you’ll need to create.
Topics in this article include:
- Divisions
- Category Names
- Excluding items and categories
- SuperCategories
- Package Items for party inventory
It is important to differentiate your equipment rentals, party rentals, sales items, etc. on your website to avoid customer confusion. You’ll accomplish this by creating applicable divisions: “EQUIPMENT,” “PARTY,” “RETAIL,” etc. The Division is the highest level of organization for your site. In most cases, each division will have its own landing page on your website. To create/manage your Divisions:
- Store Configuration menu
- Store Divisions
- Store Divisions
The next step is to assign each of your categories to the appropriate division:
- Item Configuration menu
- Item Categories
- Item Categories
Any category that is NOT assigned to a division will NOT be seen on the website.
You may need to tweak your POR Category names to make them more readable/usable for the online customer and search engines:
- Be consistent with letter case; we suggest using sentence case for your POR data and throughout your website for readability.
- Do NOT use abbreviations (i.e. use Equipment instead of Equip., etc.)
- Do NOT use "/" - instead use commas and an ampersand ('&')
- Keep names short & clear (i.e. Backhoes, Trenchers, Loaders, Tractors are too long! - Group these as Earthmoving Equipment)
- There is no need to include the word “Rentals;” however, for non-rental Categories, DO include the words “Sales,” “Accessories,” "Supplies," and/or “Parts” to help the website distinguish them.
- Your rental category names should make sense when used in this phrase: “Where to rent {category name} in {City, State}”
Your sales category names should make sense when used in this phrase: “{category name} in {City, State}”
Categories to exclude from the site may include administrative ones, Fuel, Re-rent Items, etc. See Excluding Items and Categories for more information.
SuperCategories are groups of categories. Categories may belong to more than one SuperCategory. They are helpful when you have very large categories that can be broken down into two or more new categories, then grouped together as a SuperCategory. They are also helpful when you want to group categories together based on customer interest. Using SuperCategories can help your catalogs be concise for customer ease-of-use. See Super Categories for more information.
Package Items for party inventory
Creating package items will keep your category/item listings (i.e., Linens) on your site uncluttered & easy for the customer to peruse. They are helpful for items that have different sizes or pieces available, such as china, flatware, and linens. See Suggested Item Packages for more information.
