Refunds
Previous Transaction
| ℹ️ With the MITC payment processor, "Previous Transaction" is required; "Existing Card" is not available for refunds in this configuration. |
This is the standard approach for processing refunds, as it ties the refund directly to the initial payment (token/transaction) on the relevant contract. It offers greater security and restricts refunds to the original card used for payment.
Existing Card
| ⚠️This option is linked to the "Independent Refund" setting, which must be specifically enabled with the payment processor (such as Cayan) due to potential security issues, as it permits refunds to any stored card, not just the one used for the original payment. If "Independent Refund" is not activated, attempts to refund using "Existing Card" will not work. |
This method attempts to refund a saved card on the account, which may not be the same card as the original payment. The capability to refund to any saved card poses a security concern, requiring a processor waiver before activation (e.g., Cayan).
If "Independent Refund" is disabled or unsupported by your processor, attempting "Existing Card" refunds may cause errors or declined payments. In these scenarios, use "Previous Transaction".
Recommendations
- For most refund scenarios, "Previous Transaction" is preferred for secure, reliable processing and correct transaction association.
- Use "Existing Card" only if "Independent Refund" has been enabled with your processor and your operational workflow justifies it.
